HAPE Celebtrates its 4th anniversary with Dumba Nengue in global online event

The global pandemic has changed so many things around us in ways we are still struggling to make sense of. Social distancing, shutdowns, closed borders have affected the way we relate to each other, the way we enjoy music and culture…

In the midst of these strange times, we celebrated the 4 year anniversary of our collective wanting to pay tribute to all the incredible collaborations, musical discoveries, and, above all, friendships built along the way, spanning North and South, East and West.

On Sunday May 17 we joined our friends at Dumba Nengue - a growing pan-African community dedicated to creating culture-focused online hangouts, for a first Africa-Latinoamérica edition to remind us that music and culture are essential COMMUNAL experiences - even with all of us stuck at home.

It was a truly global affair with DJ sets, live music, conversations and performances by artists from South Africa, Panama, U.S.A., Colombia, Cuba, Mozambique and friends connecting from all over the world dancing in front of their webcams!

The event took place on ZOOM and featured:

‣ DJ set by our long-time companion Nickodemus, showcasing the man's global reach.

‣ A special acoustic session by Havana’s Joao del Montestraight from his bedroom studio in Sevilla.

‣ Colombian visual artist Orly Anan who walked us through her mystical universe, with a conversation on musical collaborations with the likes of Sotomayor, Lido Pimienta and a special cosmic live performance!

‣ A live and DJ session by Panameño trumpet player Aquiles Navarro, member of liberation-oriented free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements.

‣ A special Mozambique contingent with Capetown based DJ Cajoux, Maputo-based beat maker and conversation with young trailblazers Iron Br11 and Tayrá.

‣ Visual artist and print maker Minenkulu Ngoyi from South Africa accompanied us with live sketches.
